Treasurer Board of Trustees/ Governance

Remote
The Treasurer is a statutory Trustee of BABY-I with specific delegated responsibility for financial governance, oversight, and stewardship.

The Treasurer takes the lead at board level on all financial matters, ensuring the organisation meets its legal and regulatory obligations under charity law, complies with the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP), and upholds the six core trustee duties set out in the Charity Commission's Essential Trustee guidance (CC3).

All trustees share equal legal responsibility for the charity; however, the Treasurer acts as the board's principal advisor on financial strategy, risk, controls, and accountability.
"Use your accountancy expertise to build the financial foundation of a charity that saves infant lives — not to maximise profit, but to maximise purpose."
Expert / Lead Practitioner
★★★★★
Can independently design, implement, and oversee the system, policy, or control. Able to train others, represent the charity to regulators, and make binding financial decisions without supervision

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the charity operates within its charitable objects and for the public benefit.

  • Act at all times in the best interests of BABY-I, avoiding conflicts of interest and declaring any personal interests promptly.

  • Ensure compliance with the governing document, the Charities Act 2011, and all applicable Charity Commission guidance.
  • Maintain the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct.

Financial Management & Controls
  • Accounting Records: Ensure proper accounting records are maintained in accordance with the Charities SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) and that they are sufficient to show and explain the charity’s transactions.

  • Internal Controls: Design, document, and monitor robust financial controls to prevent fraud, error, and misappropriation of funds (CC8 — Internal Financial Controls for Charities)

  • Banking & Transactions: Oversee all bank and digital payment accounts; act as a mandated signatory where required by the governing document; ensure dual-authorisation protocols are in place.

  • Asset Stewardship: Safeguard the charity’s assets (cash, investments, equipment, intellectual property) and ensure they are used exclusively for charitable purposes.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Management
  • Lead the annual budget-setting process with the Chair, Founder/CEO, and fellow trustees, ensuring the budget aligns with the strategic plan and is realistic, affordable, and mission-focused.

  • Prepare and present rolling cash-flow forecasts to anticipate liquidity pressures and ensure the charity can meet its financial obligations as they fall due.

  • Monitor actual income and expenditure against budget at each board meeting, explaining material variances and recommending corrective action where necessary.

  • Advise the board on the financial feasibility of new projects, funding applications, partnerships, and operational changes before commitments are made.

What's great in the job?

As BABY-I prepares for charitable registration, you will design the financial architecture — controls, policies, reporting frameworks, and reserves strategy — from the ground up. Everything you build will become the standard.
Rare Pre-Registration Experience
You will gain hands-on experience navigating the Charity Commission registration pathway — a distinctive credential that few finance professionals can demonstrate. You will master CC3, CC8, and CC27 compliance not as a checklist, but as a living governance framework you helped construct.
